It's hard to believe that 30 years have passed since I was forced into a studio chair and told to do a show! I still remember that 60 mins like it was yesterday and the nerves that went with it.
Special thanks to Brian Marshall and Dave Lane for putting me in that position and for giving me that regular spot despite all my cock-ups in the debut hour, and believe me there were some huge ones! I still have the tape..and I would not have hired me!! Oh and thanks to Jon **** for getting instant dismissal...but then asking your female guest about BJ's when you are live on air is not the best idea LOL.
I have met a lot of great people on the way....worked with some of the best (two of which, Colin Noble and Paul Chamberlain are still with me today) and interviewed just about all of my heroes. I've quit a few stations, been fired from some and, on more than one occasion considered retirement. Special mention here for the late, great, Tommy Vance who told me not to quit and to keep doing what I believed in. Forget how good a presenter that man was, he was a total gent!
Finally, we are at ARfm, a dream come true for me and without the belief of Tom Reps it would never have happened. Yes folks, it took a man in his 80's to recognise there was a market for a 24/7 rock station and then to back it!
I don't think I will make another 30 years but the last 9 have been great. My thanks to Tom, Paul Baker and Paul Chamberlain for helping launch ARfm in the first place and to all those who currently keep it going...you know who you are! The last two years have been more than interesting and an extra extra vote of thanks goes to Sue Birbeck who has kept my shows on track, and I must say “on time!” A great producer and a true friend.
Suppose we had better get on with planning next week then......
