When Rock Society reviewed the soundtrack CD of this it just hit the nail on the head about what was wrong with the movie.
Though the story was set in the 80's, the boys in the story were nothing like how I remember boys of that time. Nobody I know from that time would quote 'Brief Encounter' in the classroom for one, unless it was by Fish! 'Sing As We Go' (Gracie Fields) on the soundtrack just brings thoughts of the Paul O' Grady show now.
Chris Donald said more about what it was like to be a teenager/twenty-something in the 80's in 'Rude Kids - A History Of Viz' than Alan Bennett, the scriptwriter for this, did. This book is a must for readers of Viz, although fans of Danny Baker might have to brace themselves for the bits about how the broadcaster indirectly inspired a certain Cockney character!
Chris also says a lot about what Newcastle was like when the magazine was just starting off, and how the Virgin Megastore first started selling it, which brought back great memories of being at Leeds Polytechnic as well as my first boyfriend!
I loved this so much I bought this as a Christmas present for a brother-in-law who takes Viz annuals to read on holiday, and who owns 'Roger's Profanisaurus.

I remember when they ran those 5 minute Roger Mellie cartoons over the xmas period a few years back. Hilarious. Always started his cartoon with his catch phrase "Hello Good Evening and Bollox"
