THE NIGHT OF THE SUNFLOWERS (15)
Director: Jorge Cabezudo Origin: Spain Year: 2007 Duration: 123 Starring: Carmelo Gomez, Judith Diakhate, Celso Bugallo
SYNOPSIS
"This magnificent and classically told film offers a dazzling reflection on violence and vengeance. A young girl’s body is discovered in a field of sunflowers. As a travelling salesman watches the events unfold on television, in the small village of Angosto the discovery of a prehistoric cave brings excitement and the arrival of a geologist and his fiancée. A police chief plans his retirement, while his deputy dreams of escaping the boredom of his marriage and his job... Through a series of shocking events, the lives of these people become entangled in a web of violence, betrayal and murder. Threading through the action of this astonishing thriller is a bitter view of rural Spanish life rarely matched since Mario Camus' brutal backwoods classic, The Holy Innocents."
I was bored this afternoon, fancied the cinema - nothing on at the multiplexes than I wanted to see or hadn't seen, so I checked out Brighton's 'arty' cinema and found this film, in Spanish, with subtitles. Seemed like a good idea so off I toddled. Even tho I left school 30 years ago I was proud to note that I still understood some of it! (that's the lingo, not the subtitles, I could read those ok ) A really good film IMHO, kind of done in 6 layers, so you see how these people's lives intertwine and merge and how tangled up it all gets. If you like 'interesting' murder LOL ie a change from the usual blood and gore stuff, then this might suit. I liked it
