I’d checked out support band AWAKE on myspace and thought they were ok, but live the band come across a lot more impressive. If you like bands like Leverage , you’ll love these guys, Heavy as hell! I know they isn’t exactly originally, but they were great live, and considering how heavy the band was the crowd lapped em up and got great reactions and big cheers. Definitely worth checking out but be warned this music contains big f**k off keyboards! The guitar riff from “Serenity” will embed itself on you ear drums, great stuff. Check em out if you like things a little heavier…..
Unlike the shows that were recorded for the live album the whole of WOH was put into the set-list as opposed to creating two different sets. Kick starting with the amazing “Back To Earth”, which was received with great excitement from the crowd and kept the crowd on a high which lasted the whole Night, with the crowd already singing along to one of Magnum’s best songs from the pre- Storytellers era. Is it just me or does Al Barrow always look like he‘s just won the lottery no one can say he don‘t enjoy his job!. Then came “When We Were Younger” which I think the band are hoping will become a standard in the setlist, and every time I’ve heard this song live it’s gotten better reactions every time! A rare chance to hear “We All Need To Be Loved” from Rock Art came next, which was followed by the mass sing-along to the amazing “You’ll Never Sleep”. Highlight of the night for me was “Midnight” which was greeted by mass cheers from the crowd and I thought he place was gonna erupt as the Magnum guys, played their best performance of the night! So who’s genius idea was it to go straight into the dance-athon that is “Vigilante“, the setlist wasn’t allowing any dips in the already electric atmosphere! We The got the whole of WHO in order, even though my highlights were “Start Talking Love” and the awesome “Don’t wake The Lion” all the songs pleased the crowd with them singing along to every song and obviously taking great pleasure in hearing songs which may never grace the Magnum setlist again. I far more enjoyed the wings songs at Wolvo than I did in Brum! The atmosphere was far better! After a Short Break and too chants of Magnum!Magnum!Magnum! The guys came back on to play “All England’s Eyes” & “Kingdom Of Madness” to finish off the night with a bang! I know some people complain about lack of mixing up the setlist, and sticking to certain standards, but for a band that is consistently amazing to see live it doesn’t bother me and it doesn’t seem to affect an always big turn out! Bob did say at the end that Magnum & Bad Company are Set to play Caldicott Castle South Wales on August 2nd if you can’t couldn’t make the current UK tour!
Can’t wait for Bob’s solo album and (presumably!) autumn tour……
