It has been a busy week discovering new bands..... ;D Fauns are from Germany and have been around for ten years. The band was originally formed by a number of school friends and has gone through several line up changes. They blend elements of folk, rock and metal into sometimes complex, sometimes simple, but always melodic and flowing, song structures that are reminiscent of some seventies' progressive rock. Instruments such as lute, recorder and flute sit comfortably alongside some heavy guitars. The vocals vary from a female lead to male lead to some wonderful combinations and duets. The vocal style, especially from Jan-Peer Hartmann does have something very 'English' about it, but the band have their own unique style. The album Leaf Fall is a modern folk/prog outing which should intrigue fans of bands such as The Strawbs, Blue Horses, Solstice and Oceanfield. The music has rich and varied soundscapes, clear and precise vocals, punctuated by heavier passages and layers of more acoustic sounds, a great album. Interesting Prog-rock-Folk hybrid that had this Boatman's musical compass spinning through Tunng, Espers, Treebeard and Twice Bitten. Then without warning it really rocks with superb Misty Shores and the pointer shoots round to an interesting more rockier territory. The female vocals take a bit of getting used to but musically they rock my boat! Good find ProgPaul! www.myspace.com/faunsmusic
