I’d got it in my head it was 7:30 doors open, so by the time I got to the Civic John Parr was well into his set. I’m sure I’d heard the story behind St Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion) before although I can’t remember where, but it was interesting to hear again anyway! For those interested , I’m sure all those who cheered will already know this of course, but when John was on about he hadn’t played Wolverhampton before but he had played Cesar’s Palace in Dudley , which got a few cheers, it is now the mighty JB’s!
Reading other people’s reviews regarding Journey’s reception at the NIA last year, which I can’t comment on as I wasn’t there, but it seems they got a lukewarm reception. Well if that was true, it wasn’t the same at the Civic last night! The band got an amazing reception, I did think it been an all seater event may have put a dampener on the atmosphere, not so! The whole place was a buzz, I’m sure the band couldn’t have hoped for a better reaction all through their set! If it wasn’t a sell out, it wasn’t far off! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again contrary to popular belief the Black country rocks! The Civic Hall is also one of the best Venue’s in this country and always generates good atmosphere’s , they live up their motto unlike a lot of venues, “Pride Of The Black Country”!
All the new songs Journey played got great reaction’s from the crowd, which surprised me a little as I took it for granted that for the vast majority of the crowd this would be a trip down memory lane, not so with new songs like “Never walk Away”, “Change For The Better” & “After All These Years” all getting great cheers! Obviously my favourite Journey song’s were my Highlights of the evening “Separate Ways” & “Ask The Lonely”.
“Only The Young” , “Wheel In The Sky” , “Any Way You Want It” & “Don’t Stop believing’” got everyone singing-along. And obviously monster hit ballads “Who’s Crying Now” , “Open Arms” & “Faithfully” all went down extremely well! Went for a slash during “Lights” not a song I’ve ever took to! Arnel may have been employed as a Steve Perry voice clone, but he was an excellent singer and performer, who bounced around the stage and gave the show 100%! I dread to think what he’s like after a few red-bulls! But having said that all the band threw themselves in a very entertaining show, and made full use of the massive stage at the civic! I haven’t seen Journey before and was really impressed, excellent show!
