I think it was 1987. I had tickets to see Motley Crue at the NEC. It was going to be brilliant. And yes, you guessed it, they cancelled. It didn't dent my enthusiasm for the band, but I was left always wondering about the night that never was. Until relatively recently, I had imagined that the cancellation was probably due to some prima-donna behaviour. Now I realise that Nikki Sixx was probably in a very bad way - so no hard feelings! And therefore the question is, "Who cancelled on you?".

I remember coming home one lunchtime to find out that Sammy Hagar was gonna be playing at the Hammy Apollo. I was straight on the phone to Jacqui to book tickets, which she duly did. She called me to tell me we'd got front row circle seats....we were stoked, to say the least. A few days later the tickets popped through the letter box. We couldn't believe we were finally gonna get to see Sammy Hagar.. As Jacqui opened the tickets and held them in her hand, I went on the ticket website, and to my amazement, it was saying that the gig was cancelled!! We couldn't believe it. To say we were gutted is an understatement And as far as I'm aware, to this day, there has never been an explanation as to why he cancelled

In the days before Internet we'd often get to the venue door to join others with wide-mouthed "I don't believe it" style looks as they re-read the note hastily nailed up saying "cancelled due to...." Two I recall vividly were Barclay James Harvest and The Kinks. That was in Leicester and Nottingham respectively The most recent I recall was a band who had members coming from Mexico who apparently hadn't got their work-permits perfectly up-to-date and they were detained in customs! D'oh!! I won't mention the band to save their embarrassment, but at least the venue put on another band for us and refunded tickets, though most of us chucked in a fiver or more for the band who made the effort to fill in! And we made the best of it in true British style!

I've very rarely had bands cancel on me so I guess I've been lucky that way. Fish cancelled a gig in Durham once that my mate and I had tickets for. We were disappointed, obviously, but the album he was touring at the time ('Fellini Days') was so bad that there was actually a sense of relief that we weren't going to be hearing some of the songs from it. Maybe they would have worked better live but I'll never know. The current album is much better and I was glad he didn't cancel back in March of this year when I saw him in Gloucester.
