Great gig last night at JB’s!
It was the first time I’ve seen Tara’s Secret since their reformation, so was really looking forward to seeing them play, albeit an acoustic set. I really enjoyed their set and I think they went down well with those who were there. The laid back feeling the night gave allowed for some good banter from the band especially from Johnny, who wasn’t best pleased he drew the short straw and didn’t get a stool!
They played a good mixture of old and new, Kicking off with “Train Of Love” from Tomorrow The World and then kicking into “In Movies” which I thought they played excellently and went down well, think I may actually prefer this acoustically. The also played “Love Shy” and “King Of Meville” from TTW. I knew the guys had said they had changed things up a bit on King of Meville and wasn’t sure if it would have worked although it was brave of the guys to re-arrange the song. I wasn’t sure I’d like it as I love the original version, but I think they pulled it off!
Was really looking forward to hearing some of the new TS material , as I feel the guys have grown with every album and with their new material they have definitely stepped up a level! How the hell these guys are unsigned with the quality of their new stuff baffles me!
“Closer you get” a mid paced ballad, which has a killer chorus came across really well! A song that definitely will have the same impact plugged or unplugged! “Homeland” is already a firm favourite of mine and I thought it would sound great acoustically I was not wrong, definitely a grower as first time I heard it a long long time ago now , I didn’t like it! “Rock & Roll Beauty Queen” was a shocker thought the song may lose its impact stripped down as the song is a real balls to the wall rocker, and I think this went down really well, fantastic song! one thing TS are good at and that’s giving us big hook laden choruses! Song of their set for me was “One more Chance” which was just Dave Deville on keyboards, this guy can play! With Johnny singing and the rest of the guys providing backing and harmonies! Totally blown away by this song, if this don’t make their 3rd album then I’d be really shocked. Definitely going to become a firm favourite of mine…..
The finished the night with a Cover of “ladies Night” which I didn’t really like , but it was bit of fun & a tongue in cheek version of Rudolph the red nosed reindeer (I ain’t kidding!), all in all a great set from Britain’s best kept secret!
I’ve never been to see a show involving Danny whether it be solo or with The Tykes, that I haven’t enjoyed the guy is a great entertaining front man! I thought tonight , given the format, was gonna be something special and I wasn’t wrong! The laid back feel to the set created a really nice atmosphere and it was really great to hear a lot of songs you wouldn’t normally expect to hear. Danny had chosen a lot of songs that he likes or have personal meaning to himself, but doesn’t air live very often. He also played a good cross section of songs from his back catalogue and projects.
The highlights for me were “Is That All There Is” which is probably my favourite Vaughn solo song, its just an amazing song , which is great to sing along to and always comes across amazingly live! It was great to hear “Soldiers & Sailors” from the debut Vaughn CD, probably my 2nd fav song on that album, always shocked this song doesn’t get played more! Danny poured a lot of emotion into a lot of the songs like “Lifted” but probably most powerfully with “When You Walk Away”, which is lyrically an extremely powerful and emotional song anyway but last night Dannys performance of this was extremely moving and powerful!
I was really looking forward to hearing some of the From The Inside stuff , which all went down tremendously well acoustically especially “Making Waves” , “Damn” & “Visions”! hearing songs like this was what made this gig that little bit extra special!
He also dusted off “jenny Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” from the Flesh & Blood album, which went down really well with the crowd! Obviously their was a few Tykes tunes and they all went down really well including “Lay Your Body Down” , “Wings” & “Burning Down Inside”, which were all sung along to be the JB’s choir….
Of his solo stuff “Million Miles Of Road” & “Better By far” also got played and was joined onstage by a member of the crowd to sing “Restless Blood” & she did a fantastic job! Danny was shocked so few had volunteered to play/sing with the band! I would have volunteered BUT one of the stipulations to volunteering was you actually had to be able to sing! If I’d auditioned and did the chorus to Forever Young , I wouldn’t have even managed Forev- before been smacked round the back of the head and been dragged to the abattoir…….
A fantastic well played gig by all the band! I hope these shows do become a tradition! I’ll be There if they are!
