Gun were one of the first bands I got heavily into along with Thunder , Skin , Little Angels & Magnum. But I’d never seen them live. So since GUN have re-formed I’ve been biting at the bit to see them! So when I found out about this special warm up gig at the Tackeroo, I was to put it mildly a little bit excited. Although as much as I like Toby Jepson I was unsure if he could pull off some of the Gun tunes as Mark Rankin had a very different style of vocals. BUT Gun with TJ on vocals is better than no gun at all I thought!
It was really cool to see Gun in such a small and intimate venue, as obviously when these guys go on the road they’ll be playing far bigger venues! But it was a unique experience for those who turned out to see the show!
Toby never tried to imitate Marks vocals, but did sing the songs as they were created. So die hard fans will still enjoy the songs & I thought Toby did a fantastic job! When they got on stage Toby apologised as Giuliano was unwell and he didn’t look well at all. All the guys put on a storming show including Giuliano who battled through and gave it his all! As this was a warm up for the 2 gigs in Glasgow & London in which they are to perform the “Taking on the world” album in its entirety, most the set was from that album.
We got “Money (everybody Loves Her)” as the set opener aswell as “Taking On The World” , “Shame on you” , “I will be waiting” , “Can’t Get any Lower” , “Girls in Love” , “Something to believe In” & “The Feeling within” which was one of my highlights of the set, from the taking on the world album. I Have to say anyone going to the Glasgow or London gigs are in for a real treat as they all sounded fantastic on these songs!
We also got “Don’t Say It’s Over” (CLASSIC!) , Money To Burn & Welcome to The Real World. But the reactions and sing alongs’s too “Steal Your Fire” & “Word UP” were amazing, given such a small crowd I was surprised at how vocal TJ got everybody especially during “Word Up”. Obviously most the crowd were die-hard fans so it created a really great atmosphere!
They closed the set with “Better Days” from Taking on the world, and Toby grabbed a guy from the front up on to the stage and let him sing part of the song!
It was a great gig, the band sounded great and Toby can definitely do theses songs justice. Can’t wait for the UK tour and hopefully a new album, GUN are back!
