I normally avoid acoustic , especially one man and his guitar gigs like the plague. It is a lot harder for musicians to create and maintain your interest during a set, especially if its ballad heavy. I’ve seen a few acoustic gigs which have been very impressive recently like Kip Winger and Danny Vaughn’s Christmas show so its not impossible to create a good set & show.
I’d seen Bob once before acoustic and wasn’t overly impressed so ummed and ahhed over going to this, but the need to here some Immortal stuff live (albeit acoustic) won me over.
I really enjoyed Lost Weekend, and the seemed to go down very well and had some good banter but most importantly they were entertaining. The sound was very good and Paul’s voice came across well (was it the demostos?) I was impressed with Dave Thompson’s guitar work too….who had to battle a mic stand with a mind of its own! They played a few oldies like “Faith” & “Sophia’s Song (My Shining Star)”. They bunged in a couple of covers aswell with Free’s “Feel Like makin’ Love” going really well and a cover of a Bob Catley song the wrote for the Spirit of Man album “Beautiful Mind” (if that makes sense! Hahaha!) & they got in a few new tunes from the new album “Stone Hearted Woman” , “Father & Son” and “Back Street Livin’ ”. I wonder if they raised the diesel money to get home? Hmmmm
Bob & Vinny took to stage to a very happy and responsive reaction from the crowd and from then on, the night stayed on a high and both Bob and Vinny put on a great performance, with some great banter from Bob! Vinny played excellently and managed to bring all the songs to life, in its stripped down format.
Kicking off with the excellent “Light up My Way” from Immortal, which Vinny did a fantastic job with! They ran through a set of classic Bob solo trying to cover all the album’s, including “Scream” (one of my highlights of the set) , “The Pain” , “My America” & “Moment Of Truth” they also got Dave Thompson up to join them for “Spirit of Man” (which he co-wrote).
“Haunted” & “We Are Immortal” from the new album also got an airing, again Vinny doing a great job with these songs.
The only dip in the set for me personally was the mid set selection of three straight songs from the “Middle Earth” album. Not an album I ever took too……..they played “Return of The Mountain King”, “Stormcrow & Pilgrim” & “The Fellowship”.
Surprisingly no Magnum stuff tonight, but they did play Dare’s “Abandon” which I loved & Bob Did a fantastic job with it & a song Bob did for Tobias Sammett’s Avantasia project “Sign Of The Cross” also got an airing!
Given the relaxed atmosphere I think Bob and Vinny played a great entertaining gig, but I’ve always thought Bob was an excellent front man and vinny just showed tonight what a talented guitarist he is.
Bob also mentioned that he would be working with Vinny on the next solo album, dunno wether that is with Vinny as chief songwriter or just playing on the album. It may be easier for Bob to get the next album on the road (electric) if he uses english musicians next time around….
Roll on October 31st for the Moon King!!!!
