I saw this yesterday and was a bit disappointed. There wasn't much indication that this was a follow-up to Lewis Carroll's 'Alice In Wonderland'/'Through The Looking Glass'. A title like 'Return To Wonderland' might have served it better.
A 19-year-old Alice avoids a foppish man proposing to her (who looked to this viewer like a hybrid of David Cameron and Adrian Edmondson!) by following a rabbit through a hole back to Wonderland to find all's not well. She is given the task of slaying the Jabberwock on the Frabjous day.
It didn't hang together properly - a child to the left of me kept asking her mum 'Why is (such-and-such) happening?' Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter had an accent that slipped between Marc Bolan and the Pict from Pink Floyd's 'Several Species...' Paul Whitehouse's March Hare was better.
Anne Hathaway as the White Queen was ineffectual - even though she's been publicised as saying that she based her character on Nigella Lawson, I still think she resembles David Mitchell (from 'Peep Show') in drag.
Helena Bonham-Carter based her Red Queen character very much on Miranda Richardson's Queenie from Blackadder 2. The rivalry between her and the White Queen could have been explored further.
I felt a lot of things were left unexplained and the film could have had a better storyline. I liked the Hugh Syme-ish backgrounds (very Arena's 'The Visitor'!).

I also saw this yesterday & i too was left a little disappointed but for different reasons, i expected a lot more humour, especially from Matt Lucas (Tweedle Dum/Tweedle Dee) & more action throughout the film, It was ok & Johnny Depp once again plays a great part but i was expecting so much more
on a further note we saw this at Vue cinema using Dolby 3D technology ( i.e regular screen & expensive glasses) & was really disappointed in that some of the faster moving scenes seemed to be blurred & also some background imagery was out of focus, before Xmas i saw A Christmas Carol (Jim Carrey) at cinemaworld & they were using Real D 3D technology (Silverscreen & cheaper glasses) & the impact was altogether better & far more immersive
maybe something to think about if your going to see this or indeed any other 3D movie

Good analogies sister-moon! I saw this film using some funky 3D-specs , and it just made me feel queasy; I left after 45 minutes.... just in case I added my own involuntary special effects! I wasn't impressed either, I don't know what I was really expecting but it certainly wasn't what I got.
