Thanks to Ashley Franklin for recommending this, and to Mark Kermode of the Culture Show for giving this a good comment on his 'Kermode Awards' sequence.
The story is based on part of journalist Lynn Barber's autobiography, with a script by Nick Hornby. It tells of a teenage girl in the early 60's (played by Carey Mulligan), who goes off with an older man who endears himself to her parents, but turns out pretty dodgy in the end.
I felt the story was very close to the experiences of my elder niece, who did abandon her studies to marry an older man, but he was nothing like the man in the film! She's even seen to abandon cello practice in the story, just like her.
Thanks to the use of Floyd Cramer's 'On The Rebound' over the opening titles, I've had this in my head since! This instrumental was regularly used on Junior Choice and Sounds Of The 60's as an 'up to the news' track.
