Following on from my New Years Day show just wondered what people thought about jazz music, Gary Moore has always been a bit of blues and a bit of hard rock but it looks like he's doing some jazzier stuff with BB King in '06 and there are some crossovers between the genres! Honest! Please note that "Sack Fletcher" is meant in the literal "hit with" context and not an excuse to get liberal with the old P45s. Happy New Year!

Sorry Fletch cant stand the twiddly nonsense..much of which sounds like instruments falling down a flight of stairs I think Barbra Flynn summed it up perfectly in her role as Jill Swinburn in The Beiderbecke Connection when she said "There are 3 types of Jazz - hot , cool and what time does the tune start" ;D

"Derek Smalls - he wrote this............" Can't help thinking of that, or The Fast Show's Jazz Club.........."nice" "gr-eat" ;D I loved the dance troupe 'Thrusk' - had me in fits. Years ago I was at a wedding which had a jazz band......sorry but yawnerama! So I voted for 'sack Ben' but only cos I wanna hit someone at the mo ;D ;D ;D I will be gentle, honest! Hmmm, I'd rather listen to AC/DC than Jazz, and believe me, that *is* saying something! ROFL ;D

Well Fletch, ummmm Jazz, well being from the 'proggy' end of the rock spectrum, I suppose I've had to 'put up' with its influence for quite a while. So I suppose I 'don't mind' but..... Can't really see the point and quite often find myself thinking "when does the tune start?" (As others have stated here!). ;D A lot of prog bands have a 'jazz' influence, but it usually only surfaces in short bursts, (thankfully!). Leading exponent of using a short sharp blast of jazz/avant garde (is that a new deodorant?), is Guy Manning who will every so often drop in a harsh jazz break with the saxomophone (as Homer Simpson would say!), of Laura Fowles, really shifting the ear wax! Another good case of proggy fence sitting eh! Cheers Prog Paul

Must admit that I with a blues guitarist mate went to see a Theo Travis jazz gig last year (coz he plays sax with Gong) and we really enjoyed it. The audience however was frightening, it's all glasses of wine (one each to last the whole evening) and polite applause after each solo. We got one or two disdainful looks as we proceeded to chuck lager down all night, and then of course you start going to the loo every 15 mins just to make it worse. Great fun though.

Well, it just so happens that JY has written an instrumental ambient jazz album called Smooth Jazz which is really what I would call melodic gentle jazz so probably not what real jazz buffins would like but there may be people on this forum who would. The album is not released yet but it is possible to download a few tracks from www.broadjam.com. This is a great system to try out music that you have not heard before!! Go on..make JY's day, you know you want to ;D I have therefore voted for "don't mind it" on the poll which should really read don't mind it when it's music composed by JY!!

I seem to remember a trio in the seventies called Back Door who fused a bit of jazz with blues and a bit of rock. If memory serves, Carl Palmer produced one or two albums and I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't tour with ELP at one point. I'll don my deerstalker, grab my magnifying glass and look along the very dusty shelves in the archive. All being well, we'll have a listen this weekend.

Gotta say I'm increasingly drawn to Jazz, these days I'm regularly playing Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk etc. From an early age (about 11/12) was introduced to Frank Zappa, Tommy Bolin, Weather Report, The Ronnie Scott Quintet, Alan Parsons, Billy Cobham, Alphonse Mouzon, (& er..um..Herb Albert!) ) etc et al. Hell, listening to Atheist, Sadus, Pestilence, Cynic, Aghora, Talas, Gordion Knot (GULP!), Dream Theater, and their ilk...how could metal fans not at least have a passing appreciation for all things "Jazz" Satanic "Blue Tone" Muttley
