I was looking forward to this, but I was disappointed. I couldn't believe in Natalie Portman as the leading ballerina as she seemed so weedy in comparison to Mila Kunis as her rival(contrary to this Family Guy viewer's belief, she wasn't squat, bespectacled with her hair in a bob as with Meg!).
Barbara Hershey as the mother seemed to be acting in a transatlanticised version of 'Sorry!' with Portman as the Ronnie Corbett character minus the wit. I wanted a father to shout 'Language, Timothy!' I never got to know how Portman got the rash on her back. Or more on how the mother had been a ballerina wannabe before she had her daughter.
The leader of the ballet troupe seemed to be Paul Whitehouse impersonating Serge Gainsbourg (I wanted Aviva to sponsor the ballet) and his encourangement of Portman was very predictable. Winona Ryder as Beth, his former star, was under-used.
The finale was over-the -top and yet an anti-climax. She kills herself for real in imitation of her role in Swan Lake - so? I wanted them to do a recreation of Kate Bush's 'Love & Anger' promo (KB and the dancers) and have Bryan Josh or John Mitchell recreating Dave Gilmour's part!
