Could be this mob www.myspace.com/georgecintronCINTRON - CINTRON [EP] (1982, IN ROCK RECORDS) George Cintron - vocals, guitars Leo Greene - bass Ray Callahan - drums Background Cintron were a power trio from Long Island NY that played their way around local gigs during the late 70's and early 80's. Formed by ex Tattoo guitarist George Cintron, the band were prolific giggers, accruing upward of 1200 shows or more during their time together. Their one-off four track EP found it's way into the International Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal, hence my interest in it when said publication referred to them as Van Halen contenders. Having owned the EP from its very early days, I didn't actually hear a lot of VH, though I do understand that George did actually undertake an entire VH tribute set at one point. The band were described as Black Sabbath meets Van Halen, but their earthy sound played out the through the hands of a power trio wasn't quite on the mark. However, for its time, this is a pretty good effort. The Songs There are only four songs onboard. Opener 'Getaway' is a cool hard rock track, with some admittedly Tony Iommi flavored riffs, but this is far from Sabbath material. It could certainly have been a contender for Mike Varney's US Metal franchise, though it lacks the flash of many bands that eventually ended up there. In fact, there was some talk that Cintron the band were going to be featured on the US Metal compilation, but the band and Shrapnel management appear to have disagreed on the choice of song. Covering Credence Clearwater Revival's 'Fortunate Son' was a wise choice, and sounds good in Cintron's hands, but admittedly, they could've covered any number of songs - considering their vast repetoire. 'Never To Return' is a nice acoustic wash, but gradually gathers a head of steam, sounding somewhat like a cross between Wizard and Fortnox. 'Going Crazy' closes up the EP, typical of that raw hard rock sound from the early 80's which has an inordinate amount of charm.. it has to said. In Summary This EP was obviously intended as a taster of things to come, but despite the Varney connection, and the promise of a full album in 1983, nothing eventuated. A pity then, because Cintron certainly had paid their dues considering their time on the NY club circuit, supporting everyone from Twisted Sister through to Zebra and Anvil. George Cintron still continues to play, and is still a name around the Long Island music community. Nice to look back at a slab of vinyl that graced my collection for years. Track Listing: 01 Getaway 02 Fortunate Son 03 Never To Return 04 Going Crazy
