I borrowed this because the Velvet Onion (Mighty Boosh website) flagged up that Richard Ayaode (Moss in the IT Crowd) directed it. It's based on Joe Dunthorne's novel about a boy growing up in the 70's, whose parents' marriage is failing after the mother (Sally Hawkins, from Made In Dagenham)runs off with a dodgy motivational speaker.
The boy himself falls for a girl at his school who's a pyromaniac. The father (Noah Taylor - the young David Helfgott in Shine)makes up mix tapes for him through all the stages of the romance! It's a good film, but so sad when he can't bear to go to the hospital when the girl's mum dies.
Paddy Considine portrays the dodgy motivational speaker and I feel that if he was a real one, my boss would snap him up straight away for a Mind, Body & Spirit evening! Even though the banner behind him on the seminar (bonus track on the DVD) suggests that a Pink Floyd tribute band are coming on after - he has that prism logo. ;D
