Just some ramblings about the weekend......
Friday
Serpentine - really enjoyed them as I thought I would! A part of me wishes I could see them with Tony Mills on vocals as I love his voice, but thought the new bloke did very well They seemed to go down well with the crowd anyway.
Houston - Thoroughly enjoyed these lot too, altho when they came out afterwards it made me feel very old as they all look incredibly young ;D Did wonder why the singer had a dressing gown on at first but hey, it's rawk right? ;D
Terry Brock - absolutely brilliant, loved it What else can I say?
Jimi Jamison - really good altho I didn't know any of his stuff - never got around to listening to any before the weekend, silly really! The crowd certainly seemed to be going mental for him. I had to bail out at 9.30pm tho and go back to hotel, was knackered (I really am getting too old for all this gigging lark LOL) and feet were killing me
Saturday
Unfortunately due to a bad back, feeling like I'd been trodden on, and sore feet and legs I had to miss the first 4 bands (sorry Woody - I missed Vega, was gutted as really wanted to see them, but just felt unable to go) but some mega strong painkillers ensured I was there in time for:
W.E.T. - awesome, amazing, fantastic, superb, brilliant - isnert superlative of your choice here. Really got the crowd going and were wonderful from start to finish. Loved it - but anyone who knows me knew I'd say that didn't you? ;D
Strangeways - really good too, altho I thought Terry's voice was struggling a bit at times, but then the poor bloke had done a whole set the night before so it was understandable, I also heard he had a cold but TBH they were so good it didn't really matter (hope he's feeling better now). It didn't feel as 'electric' as when W.E.T were on, but was fab anyway.
Steve Augeri - brilliant, I'm sure Alison will say more on this subject ;D I didn't know his solo stuff but loved the fact there were so many Journey songs
Sunday
Newman - really good, thoroughly enjoyed it, a very good opener
White Widdow - knew I'd enjoy these as had been listening to them a fair bit. Lots of energy, and good frontman. Impressed.
Alien - OMG that bloke's voice is *amazing*. Very strong and powerful, I think these were the surprise of the weekend (for me anyway) - I thought they were great.
Kane Roberts - missed completely as the need for food was too great, as was the need to swap from glamorous rock boots into some tatty old trainers ;D I know I'm getting old as the need for comfort is the main thing these days ;D Did hear a couple of people say he wasn't that great, but as I wasn't there I can't comment.
Mitch Malloy - well the crowd certainly love him don't they? Enjoyed his set altho again, hadn't really listened to much of his so it wasn't that familiar, but what I did hear was very good.
Coney Hatch - BLOODY BRILLIANT! I absolutely loved this band - dunno how they've slipped thru my radar before as they are most deffo 'me'. Much 'rockier' than some of the other bands, which is what I prefer TBH - band of the weekend for me (after W.E.T of course ;D). I really hope they come back next year, and IMHO should've been headlining. Fantastic.
Unruly Child - didn't really do anything for me I'm afraid. I could see the crowd was loving it, but I could take it or leave it. So we erm......left it and went to the pub for 45 mins while they were on, coming back for their last 15 mins. OK, but nothing special. I didn't dislike them but think Coney Hatch would've been a far better headliner.
And now the hellos
Was lovely to see Alison again (thank you again luv for making it such a fab weekend), Liz & Nick, Debbie & Allen, Daz, Lee & John, Trevor, found Dean on the Saturday with his new haircut -which prob isn't new but as I didn't go last year it was new to me!, Graham & Chris, Sharon & Jay, Val from Italy, Tim, Erasmo from Italy, Keith & Sarah, and of course the lovely peeps from ARfm - Mr Steve "I need a coffee" Price, the simply marvellous Paul Baker (lovely to see you PB after all these years), nice to see Ralph again after about 5 years too, and nice to meet Paul Nicholls and his lovely wife Dawn Hope I haven't forgotten anyone, but knowing me I'm bound to have ;D
It was a *great* weekend, but very tiring, and Rock City is still a horrible dive, but can't see that ever changing unfortunately That said, finances permitting, I hope to do it all again next year - but 3 days is a real killer!
Thanks as always to the organisers, we could see them all running around like very busy bees all weekend, hopefully they all managed to catch some of the bands they like
Hope everyone else who went had a wonderful time See you all next year!
