The Leeds Amateur Operatic & Drama Society performed well in this, but they had a hard job to do. You have a musical by the male half of Abba and Tim Rice about an international chess tournament - gosh, how much universal appeal is that going to get? ;D
This does have 'One Night In Bangkok' and 'I Know Him So Well' as hit songs, but I was longing for the British leg of the tournament to involve a Skinner, Baddiel and Statto-like trio and ridicule the more highfalutin' seriousness of it all! A back-projection with a train track stretching back made me want to yell out 'Special guest star - Martin Orford!'
Never mind - we have 'Swallows & Amazons' next week with music by Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy! He knows about sporty concept albums having done one on cricket as part of the Duckworth Lewis Method.
