Following a message on this subject from a murderous, frightening agent ;)based in the north I thought I'd put the question to the world. Answers will determine the future of ARfm programming! Well they won't really....but for effect's purposes they will.

Murderous & frightening Moi? Hall and Oates are just not Rock. They are only "rock" to people who classify music as either with a back beat, or without. Interestingly, these people have about 5,000 sub genres for the back beat, dance music, but lob everything else into "rock". Right, I`m taking me soapbox, and wandering off. Whatever next, Elton John, Abba, Roxette, A-ha, James Blunt, mutter, mutter, mutter

Sorry, but it's not rock in my book.
'Rock' to me means superb riffs, mindblowing, face melting solo's and cracking vocals that leave you wanting for more

I guess from a powerage point of view they are far from "rock", but in my opinion they must classify as AOR in some respects? So Close featuring Bon Jovi for example? :oWhere are the phantom voters?!

Hall and Oates - AOR??? Adult - yes Orientated - possibly Rock - NO This is abuse of the term AOR, Mr F ;D And the presence of Jon Bon Jovi on one track doesn`t improve their rock credibility, either...on that basis, Michael Jackson is rock cos EVH played on one of his pop choons. And he ain`t

You raise two very VERY important points there Nick, unfortunately I am bound by contract (SP) not to mention the name of the latter artist so can't go too much into to detail He is most certainly not rock n roll. I would put tracks like Adult Education, Method of Modern Love and So Close in the vein of...ok maybe not AOR in some people's eyes but surely rock in the sense of passionate (ish) solos and guitar led foot tapping genius? There ain't not nothing commercial or chart orientated about those two, so adult orientated IMHO is a fair label. Either way it's a step up from Duran Duran! ;D

We love Hall and Oates they are AOR at times soul at others never get the recognition in this country that they deserve.Daryl Hall's first solo cd is quite rocky in parts too.

Well that would appear to settle that argument then! No wind-up, genuine question! You'll know you're being wound up when I try to argue that the Spice Girls are influenced by GirlSchool. That reminds me..on this week's show....

Ah.... the Spice Girls... now you're talking.
Must say Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) gets my vote.
Ben, you could always play* the Nolan Sisters!!! (They did sing with Lemmy once... although I can't remember on what, but I bet Paul Chamberlain knows!)
* That is a joke BTW!
